Cultivating Human Potential

Are perception and reality two different things? Are our realities actually our perceptions? Does reality truly exist? How many times a day do you say “really”, or describe and explain what you or others say or do as real and facts?
Although reality, perception, and truth have been the focus of science, philosophy, mysticism for centuries, it appears that most if not nearly all of us as human beings live our daily life automatically, ruled by our perceptions through our five known external senses. Potentially, one could argue that there are inner senses as well, mostly mentioned in mystical stories and literature, such as dreams, imagination, wonder, etc.
Rumi, the thirteen-century mystical poet among others speaks about yet another sense which may be considered as the catalyst, connecting our external senses with those inner senses, called the “shared & common sense”.
It appears to me then, that in order for us as two-legged social animals to begin the journey of growth and development with the intention of becoming an extraordinary human being, we must first practice mastery in experiencing this “shared and common sense”.
Comparing these different senses, one can say that we know a lot more about our five mostly externally triggered senses than the inner senses. We now mostly know how these work, we know how to measure them and in fact, we increasingly know how to fix them when these are not working or at least improve their potential. We have in fact been quite successful to enable the congenitally deaf and blind to hear and see with the help of medical and surgical treatments. Additionally, we also know that at least in some instances our seeing and hearing are achieved not only by eyes and ears alone but also at least a few other organs are contributing.
However, we are just at the inception of finding out that our senses may also be influenced by our past experiences, fears, agreements, traditions, manners, and attitudes to name a few.
Oh, wait! aren’t most of these influential conditions, experienced out of being with others? Is it possible that you and I can see, hear, touch people around us differently, based on these influential conditions? Is it possible that the catalyst, ” The shared common sense” plays a critical role here?
Would it be possible and useful to further examine, the common sense and above conditions in order to better understand our potential as extraordinary human beings?
